Have you ever heard of the Tiwi Islands?
There is a stretch of 60 kilometres of water between Darwin and the Tiwi Islands. In the past this has provided a useful barrier in permitting the Tiwi people the freedom to live and use their land as they see fit over many centuries. Bathurst and Melville Islands were proclaimed an Aboriginal Reserve on the 4th of December 1912.
Bathurst island is approximately 210,000 hectares. Melville Island is the larger of the two and is the second largest island off the Australian mainland spanning a large 570,000 hectares. All up that is a total land mass of about 780.000 hectares.
